Following the teaching ideas of Dr. Maria Montessori, this program is built upon the philosophy that “children learn from doing.” Dr. Montessori observed that children learn best when engaged in a purposeful activity, rather than being fed knowledge. “Learning occurs in an inquiring, cooperative, nurturing atmosphere.” This is why a typical Montessori school will have structured activities. Children are encouraged to use special materials that foster their senses. They learn by manipulating materials and interacting with others. These activities are engaged at the child's initiative and own pace.
Montessori classes tend be larger because of the belief that children learn from each other in a well controlled environment. Children are also grouped with a good mix of older and younger ones. By intentionally grouping children in a large multi-age class, children develop a stronger sense of community and develop healthy social skills.
Montessori teachers and staff receive specialized training.
