This program was originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy . The philosophy evolves around the belief that a child is a competent individual, full of potential with the power to construct his or her own knowledge through the interaction with others. The duty of a Reggio Emilia school is to create that environment.
Children are encouraged to express themselves in many forms through symbolic languages such as drawing, creative writing, social plays and drama. Lesson plans and activities follow the children's interests and progression of concept development. Activities and projects are not theme driven, but initiated by the child and achieved over a period of time. Children are encouraged to revisit their projects, and no time constraints are given.
A typical classroom will have good usage of space, colors and lighting as children are taught to value their environment. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to get involved in the classroom as they are active contributors to the child's intellectual and social development.
