Based upon the principles of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian scientist, philosopher and educator, the Waldorf philosophy aims at developing the whole child – the “head, heart and hands.” Much emphasis is given to the nurturing of a child's imagination by touching their senses. Waldorf schools incorporate nature and the arts in their curriculum encouraging students to employ creativity and free thinking.
Academics are de-emphasized in the early years and the frequent method of instruction is accomplished through the artistic medium. Practical activities such as gardening and cooking are incorporated in the curriculum.
Waldorf teachers receive specialized training and typically remain with their class and progress to the next grade together.
